The South Charleston Middle School team is proud to announce a partnership with BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) in an effort to help each and every student succeed. BARR is a strengths-based educational model that provides schools with a comprehensive approach to meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students through the power of data and relationships.

As a K-12 model, BARR is designed to create strong schools and communities by empowering students, teachers, and families with data, so that schools can re-align existing resources to nurture a unified and personalized culture of support and success for every student, both inside and outside of the classroom.
BARR is based on two pillars: relationships and data. Impacting more than 200,000 students across the country in 21 states and D.C., the relationships at the foundation of the model are staff-to-staff, staff-to-student, student-to-student, and family partnership. While these relationships are critical to improving school culture, both quantitative and qualitative data are also key in empowering staff in understanding students as a whole child. BARR provides educators with a structure to build positive, intentional relationships and use data to help understand and best support students as both a person and a learner.

An important aspect of relationship-building within the BARR model is providing students with an opportunity to participate in I-Times, which are social-emotional (SEL) lessons with a focus on building intentional relationships, teacher to student and student to student, and help foster learning. These lessons help achieve equity by facilitating conversations across differences, teaching and modeling empathy, collaboration, and listening skills. In addition, I-Times focus on building assets through lessons like goal setting, leadership style, and communication.
